Many writers’ today leave the ending of a story to be decided upon by the reader. I have chosen three stories: “The Horse Dealers Daughter”, “Jury of her Peers”, and “Taking Care”, and will discuss the implied ending of each.
In D.H Lawrence’s story “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter”, the implied ending that I assume the writer is trying to obtain is fairly obvious. The character of Mable Pervin is very negative and insecure, with a disturbed sense of what it is to be loved. When Dr. Jack Fergusson pulled her from the water and nursed her back to life, she felt as if he cared for her. After the Dr. Fergusson so strangely confessed his love, she felt as if she was not worthy of it. The ending was meant to show how overwhelming and frightening love could be. For myself, it was not till the end of the story that I truly understood the character of Mable Pervin. This story....
