In the stories "A Rose for Emily" and "Antlers," the main characters, Emily and Suzie, both share fear loneliness. Emily and Suzie attempt to overcome their loneliness by seeking human affection. However, their efforts are unsuccessful and only offer a false illusion of human compassion. At first, one may not relate the characteristics of Emily and Suzie because on the surface, their stories appear to be very differently. Yet, by examining the characters and their living conditions closely, their similar fear of loneliness and their attempts to gain affection are clearly evident. Emily and Suzie both fear loneliness and use false or unmeaningful relationships to comfort their need of being loved.
