Jane Addams was a woman who obtained a college education and wanted to dedicate her life to community service and social work in a way that would challenge her. Addams wanted to serve in a way that would have a real impact on the lives of people who had not had the same advantages as she. She was heavily influenced by the abolitionist movement, industrial movement, and the duty to serve others. She encountered a wide variety of social problems such as labor, immigration, poverty, and the abuses of industrialism.
