Todd Gitlin grew up in Brooklyn in the 1950s. He attended Bronx High School of Science and during his tenure, he won numerous scholarships and math awards. Todd Gitlin considered himself studious and clean-cut. After he graduated from high school, he attended Harvard University. During his sophomore year in 1960, he joined a Harvard-Radcliffe peace group called Tocsin. The group consisted of campus organizer-intellectuals who called themselves the New Left. In 1963, at the age of twenty years old, Todd was elected president of the Tocsin Group. Better known as SDS, Students for a Democratic Society. The SDS group consisted of at least 600 members whose mission was to shake America to its roots.
