The Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga is known as the “Turning Point” of the American Revolution. It was a major defeat of British forces on American soil. In the war, a series of engagements fought in New York. To split the colonies along the Hudson, the British planned a three-way advance on Albany from Canada, and from New York City along the Mohawk River.
On September 19th, the Royal army advanced upon the American camp in three separate columns. Two of them headed though the forests covering the region; the third, made of German troops, marched down the river road. American scouts detected Burgoyne’s army in motion and ordered Col. Daniel Morgan’s riflemen of Virginia to track the British march. At about 12:30 p.m., some of Morgan’s men came in contact with the advance guard of Burgoyne’s center column in a farm area about a mile north of the American camp. T....
