My first impression of the poem "War Is Kind" by Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was that this young man had experienced the ferocity of war in all of its intensity. Published in the year of 1899 at the same time when America was rejoicing with the conclusion of its victorious foreign involvement, The Spanish-American War.
