Throughout Lord of the Flies conflict arises between Ralph and Jack. During the book we learn that Ralph uses common sense and believes that lighting a fire and being rescued are more important than anything else is. Jack on the other hand wants to hunt and feels that hunting for food is more important than fire. Ralph tries to organise so that there is law and order; he organises fire and shelter. Throughout the book Jack wants to become the chief. When no one votes for him as chief he leaves Ralph's group and forms his own, he then becomes chief of the hunters.
