Monteverdi’s Eighth Book of Madrigals
“The madrigal had a special place in the career of Claudio Monteverdi”(Hanning 133). Monteverdi used this genre to make many stylistic changes from the late Renaissance to the early Baroque period. He went from using polyphonic vocal ensemble settings, to much more extravigant pieces that were instrumentally accompanied. His fifth through eighth books of madrigals were all published during the Baroque. Of these four books, the eighth is perhaps his most diverse and best book of madriagals.
Book eight is entitled Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi. Translated, the title is Madrigals of War and Love. Monteverdi published
