Sparta Sparta was a city-state in Greece on the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula in Laconia. This city-state was predominately a military society. City-states were independent geographical locations usually surrounded by walls with their own form of government. Because of the mountainous rugged terrain of Greece, communication and travel were relatively impossible.
